Weeds are an issue for every homeowner, especially here in Florida. Identifying them, however, can be be troublesome. The two main types of weeds include broadleaf weeds and grassy-type weeds and sedges. More than likely, both will be found somewhere in your lawn and garden. Although they look different, they are both unwanted.
Broadleaf Weeds
Broadleaf weeds come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but they all have a fibrous root system, and as the name suggests, they have leaves. Some of the most common broadleaf weeds are spurge, dogfennel, old world diamond flower, chickweed, broadleaf plantain, and many, many more. These weeds can grow in your flower beds, as well as in your beautiful grass. So, it is critical to control them before they overtake your lawn or garden. There are a variety of products designed to specifically combat broadleaf weeds, making them selective herbicides. Products such as Agrisel 3-Way Max are fantastic for targeting broadleaf weeds, as well as MSM Turf from Quali-Pro. Both are selective herbicides, which mean they directly target specific weeds without harming grasses, etc. Check out our previous post on types of weed killers to learn more.
Grassy-Type Weeds and Sedges
The second type of weed that will overtake your lawn or garden is the grassy-type weed and sedges. As the name suggests, these weeds pretty much look like grass, except uglier, which is why you want to get rid of them. One other identifying factor is that common grass (Bermuda, Saint Augustine, Bahia, etc.) grow straight up, while these weeds seem to grow in different directions. These weeds will commonly be found in your grass, which is why it is critical to use a selective herbicide, so you do not kill your grass. Products such as Blindside are great for grassy-type weeds, as well as broadleaf weeds. This product targets both types of weeds, so it is excellent for homeowners. Sedgehammer is another product specifically designed to target sedges. So, if you have been overtaken mainly by sedges, that might be a product for you. It is always important to double check that whatever product you buy is okay to be used on your specific type of grass.
